Band member of the month: Marty Ojeda

Marty Ojeda

Fast Facts

Instrument: Tenor saxophone and flute.

How long have you been playing?: For 33 years.

What do you do when you’re not playing with Landau?: When I’m not touring with Landau, I am a band director at Logan High School in Logan, WV, which is my Alma Mater. I share as much time as I can with my wonderful wife and 7-year old son.

Who are some other notable artists you’ve played with or gigs you’ve played?: My previous musical experience includes 8 years of live, session, and artist touring work in Nashville, TN. I have been fortunate enough to play with artists such as Brenda Lee, T. Graham Brown, The Bellamy Brothers, The Lynn’s, The Temptations, Martha Reeves, Bobby Vinton, and Gladys Knight. I have also opened up for acts running the gamut from Merle Haggard, Lonestar, Alan Jackson, etc., all the way to Starship, and Kool and The Gang. And I used to jam on Tuesdays with Rascal Flatts.

What’s your most memorable Landau gig?: My most memorable Landau gigs include playing our first gig in our hometown of Logan in the building where my parents met, playing the Creative Arts Center stage at WVU in the building where I met my wife, and playing a gig in the rain to a whole bunch of wet, but enthusiastic fans!

What’s your favorite part of playing with Landau?: Playing with the seasoned vets and keeping great music alive by DOING it LIVE.

What are some of your hobbies and other interests?: I love cooking, Madden football, and nature.

What advice do you have for young musicians?: Young musicians (or anyone) should remember that only time spent doing something will make you good at it. Give yourself permission to work out mistakes without frustration, and PRACTICE! Also, listen to great players of your instrument, seek out more experienced players, and realize you should never stop learning. Most important, be a good, honest, dependable person.
